Forum: GratefulDead Subject: LET'S SHOW SOME GOOD OL' DEADHEAD TOLERANCE AND ACCEPTANCE HERE!!! or is this a Grateful Dead frat house?? Please spare me the hypocrisy.

As a long time user of this site for my Grateful Dead Jones, I too see a difference between real spammers, those trying to sell sneakers etc, and someone trying to promote a Dead cover band.

I don't much care for cover bands (including most of the ones with former Dead members in them), however, I'm always interested to hear about new projects that promote the music. I'll go see Phil, if he's nearby, but I'm not DL'ing his shows. I also have never heard the particular band that has been the focus of so much venom here, and they may or may not be any good. I have, however, seen posts about non-Dead bands such as Max Creek, Phish, Dave Matthews as well as DSO and other cover bands, especially those with Band members in them. (Personally, unless I was there, I couldn't care less what Rat Dog or PL&F played last night in Palookavile or Podunk Iowa.). It seems to me that this is a perfectly acceptable forum for trying to get the word out, as long as it is done respectfully and in moderation. How is this different than the recent post about Wilco opening for Neil Young??

It also seems to me that Deadheads should be, at the very least, tolerant of anyone who is trying to perpetuate the music and the scene, even if they aren't as good as the Boys were (DUH!!) or a band like DSO that has been doing this for decades. I know that when I've seen DSO reviews, links to shows etc, I never see such vitriole from my fellow posters here.

Also the argument that this is for Dead discussion only...SPARE ME!! These posts are certainly more relevant to the Grateful Dead Scene than recent posts about "non-dead 80's songs", "The Lame Game", "Bush vs Hitler", "Wilco opening for Neil Young", the omni-present sports posts (enough about the Sox and Celtics already!!) and any number of irrelevant posts that show up here ad-nuaseum (and yes, I have read them, replied to them and even posted a few). Some of these are fun, some silly, and most are totally irrelevant to the point of this forum. Isn't it a wee bit hypocritical for folks who post or partake in non-Dead messages to be complaining, all of a sudden that "this forum should be only about the Grateful Dead", just because they don't like the particular post or poster? Looking at the post history of folks who replied to the offending post, I see that, just about everyone of them has either written Non-dead posts (usually more than one), partaken in them or responded to at least one of them in a positive manner.

Look if we're gonna make this about The Dead family only, let's do it, otherwise, well you know...."He who is without sin...."

This forum also tends to have a kind of good ol' boy attitude. Many newcomers are immediately dumped on, as if they are unwelcome. This isn't an exclusive club, and it's not some stupid Frat where newbies have to run the gauntlet and be hazed before they are accepted. This is a Grateful Dead Forum!! We are supposed to be different, more enlightened and tolerant. Among the things I always loved about the scene was the incredible diversity of the fan base, and the tolerance, acceptance and sense of equality that was prevalent everywhere I met Deadheads. We were always about expanding the fan base and turning people on to the incredible experience that is Grateful Dead music.

Let's keep this forum fun, as well as informative. For the most part, I like the way this forum has evolved. Those who have been here a while will remember that about a year and a half ago, there were a lot of nasty, personal and aggresive posts. For me it was far too negative and contradictive to my view of Deadheads and I dropped out for a while. I am glad to see that, for the most part, that's in the past.

As someone who saw the Boys so many times for so many years, I have come to really appreciate this forum. I thought I knew all I needed to know, but have learned so much, and gained an even deeper appreciation for all things Grateful Dead.

So let me say WELCOME to all Deadheads, Fans and the curious, especially you newcomers. I hope this forum adds to your enjoyment of the music, and that you make new friends here, and most of all that you gain a deeper understanding about the Grateful dead, the Family, the Music, and yourself.

OHH....By the way, Dylan is playing in Park City Ut next weekend, I'll also be seeing Bonnie Raitt w/ Leo Kotke at Red Butte in SLC. (Please feel free to dump on me, I know some of you will be offended because I'm promoting a non-dead event).

Not to mention that a lot of "Newbies" may actually be old school heads who can add a lot of perspective to some conversations but don't bother posting because they may think it's not worth the acceptance hastle.

Well get off your Olympics Dedicated Butt and put in some serious effort around here! How do expect us to carry the load for Team Forum? You think we haven't been sweating and straining and working it out for four long years just to see it all slip away this close to the closing ceremonies?

For Gawd's Sake, Team America is about to lose the VBall for women...

I can understand that...the "acceptance hassle" biz.

However, as I have always said, if you come to this place and put in your time, in the spirit of posting a few weeks worth of DEAD related commentary, the love and peace and flowers that flow from all those that seem prickly and uptight is generally amazing, proving to me that "acceptance" really just comes down to doing the right thing...and then you are taken into the fold.

It ain't rocket science. If a techno moron like me can do it, so can anyone.

Funny you should mention that. I was looking at an old post of mine and found one of your old posts about your top 10 posters here. That was a funny post.

I do agree that if you have something to offer, you'll be accepted.

you had a post titled "the only top 10 that matters". I was trying to remember and old poster here and had just come across your post. It was about making it to the "inner circle" here and I responded that it felt like being in gym class and waiting to be picked (or not being picked in this case).

i find hypocrites all over this site and others too. after all, by a 2 to 1 margin. the grateful dead was a cover band of its own. the 2 to 1 odds, if you wanna call it that, is the FACT the dead played twice as many covers as they did their very own music. so why would a real deadhead mock any other cover band esp a gd cover band. the music must go on. does it matter who is playing it? does it matter whos promoting it? as long as it gets out there, who really cares. half you guys never even seen jerry and his back up band called the grateful dead. personally i prefer jerry with any one else but the dead. but thats just me.

All the more reason to stick to 68: as we noted previously, only in this year were the vast majority of shows 95% pure unadulterated DEAD. Think of setlists from summer of 68 thru summer of 69: some shows had only a single cover tune!

There, I am morally ahead of all the rest by my rejection of the "coverband eras" of the DEAD!

I get your point, nagdot...but I'm not sure it's true the Dead played more covers than originals esp. by a "2 to 1" margin.

If you go album by album you'll find the originals outweigh covers by quite a large margin.

The Dead certainly did a number of covers and virtually made them their own (GDTRFB, IKYR, Don't Ease, Death Don't, just to name a few), but I don;'t think it's accurate that they did more covers than originals.

Just in case anyone misunderstood my take...I am not against non-dead posts. I enjoy many of them and I have written many myself, including the recent request for Jorma lyrics. There are also some that I don't particularly like, but I think we have to take the good with the bad here. My point was just that if we are going to tolerate them here, that's great, but we should allow all to express themselves.

Hey PG--we go way back so I know you'll not take this the wrong way, and in fact, I see much merit in what you put down, but I did want to respond as to whether or not "nonDEAD" posts are good or bad, right or wrong, etc., etc. Only in that context is the following commentary relevant.

When CLIFF asks "how's fishing?" and Elbow or JGlynn respond with "not bad" or JOTS says "the PATS suck!" and William Tell says "right!", that is something altogether different from a nondead post that is an advertisement, an endorsement or what have you (something recognizably different from a "hello" between two friends).

Just thought that should be made clear.

Why, I am not sure...

By the way, Tell,

Hi, how've you been? :)

Like I said, I like the way this forum has evolved and I always like hearing other views, especially from folks like you and Johhny who have been here since I can remember. It's also good to get new blood and views here as well. So once again, Greetings to all my old friends and new ones here....Long Live Grateful Dead Music.

I have passed my love for the band to my 19y/o son and he plays guitar, keyboards, fiddle and mandolin, so if he ever ends up being involved in a Dead cover band, I hope you folks will indulge a father's pride if I brag a little about it..... :)-

It has been a chaotic couple of years, my friend. But, I will always remember you as one of the originals hereabouts, and like McGlone, a Kind Soul. That counts for something, I am sure.

And, I know that we often engage in nonDEAD exchanges, and just wanted to defend them as such, though they probably irritate, bore and otherwise disturb many others, especially those not "in" the group, whatever that is...

If the Maykers Defender was just saying "Hello!" to Noise Collector or some such, he/she no doubt would have caught no flack for a nonDEAD post...

No biggie. Good to see you around here, brother. Good to see you.

hey purple, I'm pretty certain this character is not only another ( or the same ) multiposter trying to be cute, but has nothing to do with that band. Picked that band out of thin air to have a little fun with people.

I did - and although those relationships came about in a gd forum where our mutual love of the dead was a given, the connections happened because of other interests. who'd would have thought the same could have occurred. Oh well, back to trying to pinpoint the best version of estimated in '77. lord knows it hardly ever got performed that year. after that it's off to find the best mexicali.

Try this show from '78 for the best Mexicali. Seriously, this show is so good even the Mexicali is worth a listen.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1978-04-16.sbd.cantor.motb.81457.sbeok.flac16

I think this has the best sound quality of any show i have heard here. The MOTB folks refer to it as "an OMG recording." The Peggy-O prior to the Mexicali is awesome as is the Scarlet>Fire 1st set closer. There is an Estimated in the second set, it may rival the 3 or 4 that were played in '77.

you mean with the coach that last night reclaimed a gold medal for the us hoops' team - with our assistant coaches and former asst, now stanford head coach, getting plenty of air time during the celebration? I'm sure that hurt recruiting - watching Lebron and Kobe hug K and talk about what a great coach he is... And you thought that those fans were annoying before....

Of course, UNC is loaded this year. But then again, the Dean Smith Center show can't even begin to compare to 4/12/78. Jumpin' Jerry U.S. Blues.
